Phyllis Goodyear, Board of Directors
Phyllis Goodyear was born in Indianapolis, IN., the youngest of two children. She has lived most of her life in Indianapolis with the exception of a year in Sarasota, FL., when she was a child and a little over a year in Frankfort, IN.
Phyllis received a Bachelor’s degree in 1975 from Indiana University, Bloomington, with a degree in Spanish and French and a teaching certification. Unable to find a teaching job, she worked in various capacities, spending a number of years in advertising and public relations. For four years, she also ran her own freelance writing company, Your Words Worth.
In 1992, Phyllis received a call into the ministry and began attending Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, in 1993. She received her Master of Divinity degree in 1997.
Phyllis has been a pastor for nearly ten years. She served at Union Baptist Church (Forest, IN.) and Covenant Baptist Church (Indianapolis, IN.) She now serves the American Baptist Churches of Indiana and Kentucky, where she is an area minister for the Northeast Area churches and works in communications and technology.
During her 5 ½-year tenure at Covenant Baptist, she worked closely with the Eagledale Neighborhood Association, encouraging cooperation between the church and neighborhood at several annual events. She also served on the steering committee for the formation of a community center in the Eagledale neighborhood.
Phyllis says, “I have always had a passion for serving the homeless population in Indianapolis. I believe that God is calling us as Christians to reach out into our communities and carry on the healing and ministering work of Jesus Christ. I am extremely excited to bring my skills and gifts to the board of Restoring Lives West.”
Diane K. Myer, Board of Directors
Diane K. Myer is a lifelong resident of Indianapolis except for a stay of 5 years in Florida. She has three brothers and three sisters. Her children are Heather, Joe and Eleanor. Heather’s three children Michael, Matthew, and Madison add spice to the many family gatherings so
important to Diane. “Family is particularly important since my husband, Dean, passed away in 1995. Family is a treasure.”
Diane also enjoys reading, gardening, and cooking. Reading came early. “I clearly remember walking to the Bookmobile and selecting my first book to take home. The book was pictures, no words, but I can still tell you the story. It was the beginning of a lifelong love of books.”
Books paved a solid path in school. Diane graduated from Arsenal Technical High School, Indianapolis, in 1970. Butler University, Indianapolis, and IUPUI provided additional education in accounting & finance, business and communication. “I still take continuing education
courses. I could easily be a permanent student.” Work experience includes:
• President and CEO Contract Interiors and Design, Inc
• Accounting & Finance Anthem Health Plan, Inc
• Business Manager Madison Avenue Styles, Inc
“Gardening and cooking are my creative outlets. It’s so easy to express my love with flowers, plants, and a delightful meal. It was of special meaning to me that this last winter I was able to work beside my Aunt Kay in her kitchen and learn her recipe and techniques for making her
famous chocolate and butterscotch meringue pies. I consider it an honor to have these recipes passed down to me. I love to share with friends and family with these gifts.” Diane also shares with church family at Ben Davis Christian Church, Indianapolis. She’s been a
member for 26 years. She joined the year her son, Joe, was born. She and her husband, Dean, were baptized on the same day. “Church family has sustained me and encouraged me through my highs and lows. I will always love my family there at Ben Davis.” Joys shared are Sunday School teaching for toddlers, sharing and caring, VBS Director, and membership in Genesis Class. “I’ve recently begun to work with Consolation Meals Committee at Ben Davis. This gives me a very good place to use my skills and gifts.” Sharing comes easy at Restoring Lives West, Inc. “I learned about Restoring Lives West through Hope Garrett, executive director. Her dedication and love for the young people that call her and come through the door was a clear message that this was a place where my skills and gifts could find a useful place. May God be pleased with any work that I accomplish.”
Matthew Asher, Board of Directors
Matthew was born in Taiwan and was adopted at the age of 3. He grew up in Nabb, IN and has 8 brothers and sisters. Matthew and his wife are active members of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
“I have always had a passion to serve the community, and be a role model to those less fortunate. I am truly blessed to have been adopted and raised in a family with strong values,” notes Matthew. He was first introduced to Restoring Lives West at the Indiana Flower and Patio Show in 2009. “I believe that God put me in that situation for a reason. It is amazing how he works in our lives to bring the right people together for a great cause.”
